With the rise of mobile devices, social media, video content, gamification experiences, and big data, our learners' expectations for developing their skills have become more sophisticated. Yet organizations still manage their learning events with an LMS, which limits capturing a wide range of these learning experiences. All of these  learning opportunities can be recorded with the Experience API (xAPI) also known as the “Tin Can” API.

We all learn from interactions with other people, content, and experience. When this learning occurs, it can happen anywhere, often outside of a formal training environment. It is not included in today’s LMSs. If you want to learn how to make use of the cutting edge method for capturing these learning events you need to participate in this workshop!

A learning ecosystem’s value is defined by the usability of the data produced and consumed by activity within it. The Experience API (xAPI) is emerging as an enabling technology that allows organizations to track experiences across a learning ecosystem. However, capturing and sharing individual performance data in ecosystems has both challenges and opportunities.

In this workshop, we will discuss emerging trends and technology that will enable you to design, provide and capture more meaningful and effective learning experiences.

Learn:
  • What is the xAPI? Why another specification past SCORM?
  • What are the business problems / outcomes that it addresses?
  • What is a learning ecosystem and what are its affordances?
  • What are the design approaches for using it?
  • What can you expect from vendors and when?
  • What do you need to know to scope a pilot for your organization applying xAPI?
  • What are the practical steps towards approaching xAPI?
  • Where do you go for key resources (how to, open source, etc.)?
  • What does the future look like?

Target Audience:
  • Training Managers, Instructional Designers, Developers,
  • Project Managers, Managers, Directors, Training, Learning and Development C-level Executives
Join us for a full day workshop that will give you the basics to understanding this cutting-edge technology, its impact on training and development, and how to apply it strategically in your workplace and training environment. All participants will receive useful materials to take back to the workplace.

PRESENTER:
Michael Hruska is a technologist with experiences spanning across standards, emerging technologies, learning, and science. He is a former researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, MD. He is  currently the President/CEO of Problem Solutions, and provides learning technology solutions to government, commercial, and
nonprofit organizations. His team has been supporting efforts for the last 4 years at the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative on the future of a Training and Learning Architecture (TLA) and the Experience API. He holds a B.S. from the University of Pittsburgh and is a member of the e-Learning Guild, American Society of Training and Development (ASTD), and the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA).

Marty Rosenheck, Ph.D. is a thought leader and sought-after consultant, speaker, and writer on the application of technology guided by cognitive science research to learning and performance. He has been helping people and organizations develop expert performance for over 30 years. Marty has designed award winning learning and
performance support systems, conducted assessments, developed learning paths, applied knowledge harvesting techniques, created virtual learning environments and developed social learning strategies for dozens of organizations. He is currently CEO and Chief Learning Strategist at Cognitive Advisors, the makers of the TREK Learning Experience Manager, one of the first applications built from the ground up on the xAPI standard to manage and track on-the-job learning and enable nano-coaching. TREK recently won the Brandon Hall Gold Award for Best Advance in Unique Learning Technology. Marty has shared his ideas on using technology to develop expert performance in numerous publications, presentations, and workshops.
