From PURPOSE to PROCESS to PEOPLE:The Art of Working Well Virtual Workshop Series
THREE Workshop Sessions: July 7, 14, 21 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
TWO Office Hour Periods (Optional): July 12 & 19 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Work processes are the heart of the organization. They express the purpose of the organization into action. They are how workers engage with the life of the company. But when performance falls short, we are quick to focus on the worker. We think about expanding supervision, increasing motivation, enhancing job skills, improving documentation, pressing for greater effort, or addressing soft skill deficits. But more often the problem is in the design of the work... independent of the worker!
A poorly designed work process will create frustration, confusion, annoyance, apathy, and all manner of employee complaints. But our tool kit for designing and describing work is often limited to detailed documentation, flow charts, and job descriptions. We settle for procedural refinement as a substitute for genuine process improvement. We ignore crucial executive and managerial processes only because they are less visible or concrete. What we need is a concept of work process robust enough to guide us in designing all work, from detailed financial procedures to performance management to strategic planning.
